Ireland plans a tougher road to citizenship

The government approved priority drafting of new naturalisation rules on 10 Sept 2026
The plan raises required residence from 5 to 8 years
New language and civics tests and a legal financial requirement are also proposed
Nothing has changed yet: current applicants still apply under today's rules
